Why a dedicated list
FHL is not a stiffness of the big toe in the usual sense. It is a mechanical conflict between a tendon, the flexor hallucis longus, and the bony tunnel it passes through behind the ankle. That distinction is decisive: it changes the clinical examination, the treatment, and therefore the practitioner to turn to.

What a trained practitioner looks for
FHL is not diagnosed on an X-ray: the diagnosis rests on a clinical test that compares the mobility of the big toe according to the position of the ankle. A trained practitioner knows that normal mobility on palpation does not rule out the condition, and that the blockage occurs at a precise moment of the foot roll-through.
